Brian L. Withrow, Ph.D.
Founder and Principal
Dr. Brian L. Withrow is the founder and principal of Atticus Analytics. He is also an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Texas State University – San Marcos. Prior to joining the Texas State University faculty in 2009, Brian was an Associate Professor and Director of the Forensic Sciences Program at Wichita State University. While on the faculty at Wichita State University, Dr. Withrow served one term as Mayor of Bel Aire Kansas. From 1993 to 1999, Dr. Withrow managed a police leadership development program at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville Texas. From 1981 to 1993, Brian worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety as a State Trooper, Training Officer, Inspector and Bureau Manager.
Brian earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1981, his Masters of Public Administration from Southwest Texas State University in 1993, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University in 1999.
Dr. Withrow is one of the nation’s leading experts on the racial profiling controversy. He has authored numerous articles and reports on this controversy. Dr. Withrow’s 2006 publication Racial Profiling: From Rhetoric to Reason (Pearson/Prentice Hall) is one of the most widely read textbooks on the racial profiling controversy. His new book Practical Solutions to Racial Profiling: Ten Things Policing Leaders Should Know will be available from LooseLeaf Law Publishing in 2010. Currently, Dr. Withrow is writing a research methods textbook for Routledge Publishing. Because of his professional experience as a police administrator and extensive research as a scholar Dr. Withrow is regularly asked to provide technical and litigation assistance to police agencies.
Brian lives in Austin Texas. An Eagle Scout, Brian has remained active in the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life and currently serves as a Unit Commissioner for the Capitol Area Council, BSA. He and his wife Lisa (an elementary school teacher and children’s book author) have been married for 27 years and have four grown children.
